Hainsworth is a leading figure in the textile world and has been for over two centuries. One area in which they dominate is in snooker and pool coverings. Professionals and celebrities alike insist that their tables be covered by Hainsworth cloth. They were the first company to produce personalised and branded snooker and pool cloth with crisp, clear images and complex patterns with no loss in table performance using their specialist printing techniques.
The company traces its history back to 1783 when Abimelech Hainsworth ‘Old Bim’ started his clothiers business. Slowly his business grew and by his death in 1836 he was the wealthiest man in the district.
The company passed through the family over a number of generations and the saw a number of changes including industrialisation. A new mill was built in the 1950s as a result of a fire in the original building.
Hainsworth has a long history of creating cloth for the military . Beginning with the bright scarlet cloth of the 19th century which then had to be adapted as warfare adapted to include Khaki Serge. However, the bright cloth is still used today for ceremonial dress.
In 2008 to celebrate over 225 years in business they underwent a brand review and re-launched with a fresh new image and a firm grip on the ever changing textile industry.
“Since the Battle of Waterloo Hainsworth cloth has clothed the British Army and is now seen on parade in scarlet tunics by audiences around the world; its cloth has also clothed Royalty for generations right up to the present day with Prince William wearing our cloth during his recent marriage. To be Managing Director of a company which such a history is an immense privilege”
