Joshua Tetley & Son Ltd, Brewers, Leeds (WYL756)
c1804 - 1995
The nominations for Leeds would not be complete without Tetley’s. A strong loyalty still remains in Yorkshire to the brewery, and the archive is the perfect way to preserve it’s memory for future generations.
It all started in 1822 when Joshua Tetley took over William Sykes’ brewery in Salem Place with the idea to brew his own beer as well as selling malt. Ahead of his time he was met with resistance trying to change tradition, but he soon established the brewery, after WW1 bottled beer was also sold in great quantities, and by 1950 Tetley’s owned more than 400 licensed houses.
Containing the business records for not only Tetley’s, but also the other breweries taken over, as well as the licensed houses it owned, there is a mine of information held within the collection.

Leeds Pious Uses Committee, Minutes, Accounts & Other Records (WYL160/197)
1664-1934
Buried deep within the collection of Dibb Lupton, Solicitors of Leeds, are the records for the Leeds Pious Uses Committee, and you would be lucky to unearth this treasure.
Not only do these records give us a fascinating insight into the social, economical and political issues faced by those with the responsibility for administering charitable gifts for the poor, but they also provide us with an account of life in Leeds from the 17th Century onwards.
The Committee was made up of 12 men entrusted to employ land, goods and money for charitable uses, such as the relief of the aged, poor, injured soldiers, and education. They also dedicated a high proportion of their time to the improvement of the town, and the records show the future these men visualised for Leeds that we live in now.
